The comfort of routines

Routines

Establishing a regular routine can reduce stress and anxiety. Routines provide comfort by allowing us to feel a sense of control over our day. You might recall that our stress response is activated under challenging and unpredictable circumstances.

Through creating a set of predictable behaviours, building routines allows the mind to alleviate anxiety over the unknown.

Practicing a morning routine may be especially important on days we feel more stressed or anxious than usual. A night time routine can also help us wind down and prepare for bed.

Your routine could include habits to eat healthy, exercise, journal or practice mindfulness.

When building new habits, it's best to start small. Start with one new activity at a time. Find out more behaviour change tips to give you the best chance of creating habits that stick.
