Calm the body

When we feel stressed, our body is preparing us for action - also known as the fight or flight response. This is why we feel tense and find it difficult to wind down when we’re stressed.

Learning how to relax our body is important to improving health and wellbeing, promoting better sleep, and enhancing our ability to think clearly and make sound decisions.

Learn ways to calm the body.

An effective way to work through stress is by moving our body! You could go for a walk, schedule an exercise class, do some gardening or pop on your favourite songs and get your groove on.

Other activities include:

  • Deep breathing
  • Progressive muscle relaxation
  • Mindfulness exercises
  • Meditation
  • Grounding exercises
  • Calm the mind

Fun fact: One hypothesis is that moving our body helps us to return to a state of calm because it signals to our mind and body that we have taken action to outrun the threat (e.g. fight or flight).
